Microwave Runs But Does Not Heat? It Is Usually the Magnetron
Independent multi brand repair service. We are not an authorised service centre for any brand and we are not associated with any manufacturer. Full disclaimer at the end of this page.
A microwave that lights up, turns the plate and counts down but leaves the food cold has a fault in its high voltage section. That means the magnetron, the high voltage diode, the capacitor or the transformer. The control side is working, which is why everything looks normal. This is also the one appliance repair we tell people never to attempt at home, and the reason is worth reading before anything else.
Read this first
Do not open a microwave oven. Not even unplugged. Not even the next day.
A microwave contains a high voltage capacitor that stores a charge capable of killing a person. It can hold that charge long after the oven is unplugged, and it is most likely to still be holding it on an oven that has stopped heating, because the fault may have prevented it discharging normally.
There is no meaningful difference here between a microwave and the other appliances in your kitchen. A washing machine will give you a shock. A microwave capacitor will stop your heart. Technicians discharge it deliberately with an insulated tool before touching anything inside, every single time.
Everything in this article that involves opening the cabinet is a description of what we do, not an instruction. The two checks below are the only ones worth doing at home.
The two safe checks
Both take a minute and both rule out a wasted service call.
- Check it is not in demo or display mode. Shop display units run with the magnetron disabled so they can be shown off safely, and the setting can be triggered accidentally at home by a particular button combination. The oven lights, turns and counts down normally but never heats. Look for Demo, Display or DEMO in the manual and the clearing sequence for your model. We have attended calls that were only this.
- Run the one cup water test. Put a cup of room temperature water inside and run it for one minute on full power. If the water is noticeably warmer, the oven is heating and the real complaint is weak or uneven heating, which is a different conversation. If it is exactly as cold as it went in, the high voltage side is dead.
Worth knowing: never run a microwave empty to test it. With nothing to absorb the energy it reflects back into the magnetron and can damage an oven that was working fine. Always put a cup of water in.
The magnetron
The magnetron is the component that actually produces the microwaves. It is the single most common cause of an oven that runs without heating, and it is a wear part rather than a defect. Most have a working life measured in years of accumulated runtime, so an oven used heavily every day will reach the end of its magnetron sooner than one used at weekends.
A failing magnetron sometimes gives warning first: heating that gets gradually weaker over weeks, or an oven that heats for the first minute and then stops. More often it simply stops one day.
Replacing it is a straightforward job for someone equipped to do it, and it is by far the most frequent microwave repair we carry out.
The other three suspects
The magnetron does not work alone. Three parts feed it, and any one of them can fail with the same symptom.
- The high voltage diode. A small component that often fails short. When it goes the oven may also hum loudly or trip the house MCB. One of the cheaper parts in the chain.
- The high voltage capacitor. The dangerous one described above. When it fails the magnetron gets no supply and the oven runs cold.
- The high voltage transformer. The heaviest component in the oven. Less common as a failure, and usually the point where a repair starts to be worth weighing against the price of a new oven.
Diagnosis is not guesswork. Each of these is tested in turn after the capacitor has been discharged, and that testing is what tells you whether you are looking at a cheap part or an expensive one.
When it is just the door switch
Microwaves have a set of interlock switches that confirm the door is properly shut. If one of them fails in a way that says open when the door is closed, the oven will light and turn but will not fire the magnetron, because it believes the door is ajar.
This is a cheaper fault than the magnetron and it is always checked first. A door that has to be pushed or lifted slightly to make the oven start is a strong hint that the latch or a switch is on its way out.
Is it worth repairing?
An honest answer, because microwaves sit at a price point where this is a real question.
A door switch, a diode or a control board repair is almost always worth doing. A magnetron on a solo microwave that is more than eight or nine years old is a closer call, and on a convection oven, where the machine itself cost considerably more, it usually still makes sense. A failed transformer on an old solo unit is normally the point where we tell people to put the money toward a new one instead.
We would rather say that on the visit than take on a repair that does not serve you.
Roughly what it costs
The doorstep visit and full diagnosis is a flat ₹299, set against your final bill if you go ahead. A door switch or diode is among the cheaper repairs. A magnetron sits in the middle. A transformer or a combination of failed parts sits at the top, which is where the repair or replace conversation comes in.
What a repair costs depends on the fault, the parts used, the brand and the condition of the machine, so we quote only after the technician has seen it, and nothing proceeds without your approval.
Why this happens more often in Kolkata
Voltage swings. The high voltage section of a microwave is sensitive to an unstable supply. Repeated spikes and sags shorten the life of the diode, the capacitor and eventually the magnetron. An oven on a line shared with air conditioners in summer is working harder than it looks.
Humidity. Damp works on the internal insulation and on the door seal over years, and a door that no longer closes squarely is what puts the interlock switches under strain.
Heavy daily use. Magnetron life is counted in running hours. In a household that reheats several times a day, every day, the clock runs faster than in one that uses the oven occasionally.
Questions people ask us
Why does my microwave run but not heat the food?
The control side is working and the high voltage side is not. In practice that means the magnetron, the high voltage diode, the capacitor, the transformer, or a door interlock switch that wrongly thinks the door is open. The magnetron is the most common of these. Before booking anyone, check the oven is not in demo mode and run a one cup water test for a minute to confirm it genuinely is not heating.
Can I replace a microwave magnetron myself?
No, and this is the one appliance where we are firm about it. A microwave contains a high voltage capacitor that can hold a lethal charge long after the oven is unplugged, and it is most likely to still be charged on an oven that has stopped working. A technician discharges it deliberately with an insulated tool before touching anything. There is no safe version of this as a home repair.
How much does it cost to repair a microwave that is not heating?
The doorstep visit and full diagnosis is a flat ₹299, set against your final bill if you go ahead with the repair. A door switch or a diode is at the cheaper end, a magnetron sits in the middle, and a transformer is at the top. What a repair costs depends on the fault, the parts used, the brand and the condition of the machine, so we quote only after the technician has seen it, and nothing proceeds without your approval. If the repair is not worth the money on an older oven, we will say so.
Do you repair microwave ovens across Kolkata?
Yes. We work on solo, grill and convection microwave ovens from every major brand, as an independent multi brand repair service. Our workshop is on Nilachal Road in Birati, so we reach Birati, Dum Dum, Madhyamgram, Sodepur and the surrounding North Kolkata areas quickly, usually the same day. Every repair carries our 30 day repair warranty, and replaced parts often carry longer cover depending on the part.
Cold food after the water test?
Leave it unplugged and let us look at it. A technician visit is a flat ₹299 including full diagnosis, and we will tell you honestly if the oven is not worth repairing.

Important: we are an independent repair service
Roy Home Appliances Service Care is an independent, third party home appliance repair service provider. We are not an authorised service centre for any brand, and we are not associated with, affiliated to, endorsed by or part of the authorised service network of any brand or any other brand or manufacturer.
We are a multi brand repair service. We repair home appliances from all major brands, and we have no commercial tie up with any single one of them. Brand names, model names and product names mentioned on this page are the property of their respective owners and are used here only to identify the appliances we service and to help readers understand their own machine.
If your appliance is still inside the manufacturer's warranty period, we would suggest you contact the brand's own authorised service centre first, since a repair by an independent service provider may affect that warranty. Nothing on this page is an instruction to open or work inside a microwave oven. The high voltage capacitor inside can hold a dangerous charge even when the oven is unplugged.
