LG Washing Machine Error Codes Explained (And Which Ones Need a Technician)

LG washing machines use two letter codes to say where a cycle stopped. Most of them come down to water not arriving, water not leaving, the door, or the load sitting unevenly in the drum. A fair number clear with no parts at all. Here is what each code means, what we usually find on site, and the point where you should stop and call someone.

Code sets differ a little between front loaders, top loaders and model years. If your panel shows something not listed here, write it down exactly as it appears and check the sticker inside the door or under the lid before assuming the worst.

IE and 1E: the machine is not filling

IE and 1E are the same fault. The letter I in LG panel fonts is a bare vertical stroke, so a lot of people read it as the number one. Either way the machine has waited for the water level to rise, not seen it happen inside the allowed time, and stopped so it does not run dry.

Four checks, in the order a technician would do them:

  1. Is the tap fully open? A tap that is only part open will fill a bucket happily and still starve a washing machine. This is the most common thing we find.
  2. Check the hose for a kink. Machines get pushed back against the wall after mopping and the hose folds over behind them.
  3. Clean the inlet filter. Shut the tap, unscrew the hose from the back of the machine, and there is a small mesh screen sitting in the inlet port. In most Kolkata homes it is packed with fine grit. Rinse it, push it back, hand tighten.
  4. Try at a different hour. If the building runs on a pump and pressure drops during the morning rush, the machine may fill fine at noon and throw IE at seven in the morning.

If all four are clear and IE is still showing, the inlet valve has most likely failed. It is a part replacement and one of the cheaper faults on a washing machine. Our technician tests the valve before anything is opened up.

OE: water sitting in the drum

The wash finishes and the drum is still full. Start at the pump filter, because that is where the problem usually is.

On LG front loaders there is a small hatch at the bottom of the front panel. Behind it sits the filter and a short drain tube. Lay a towel and a shallow tray down first, because more water comes out than people expect. Unscrew the filter and look at what is caught in it. Coins, hair clips, lint and the occasional safety pin make up most of what we pull out.

Next, the drain hose. If the end is pushed too far down the standpipe, or the hose sags and holds water, the machine cannot clear the line. It should sit at the height the manual specifies rather than lying flat on the floor.

Filter clean and hose clear but still OE? The pump is probably jammed or burnt out. On a jammed pump you can often hear it trying, a low hum with nothing moving.

dE: the door code

dE means the machine does not believe the door is locked, and most of the time it is right. A sleeve, a sock, the corner of a bedsheet caught in the seal is enough to stop the latch seating. Open it, move the load, push the door until it clicks, start again.

If the door is properly shut and dE still appears, the latch or the lock assembly has worn. dE1 and dE2 point at the lock circuit rather than the physical catch, and those need a technician. The part itself is small and inexpensive, which is worth knowing before anyone talks you into a new machine.

UE: the load is sitting unevenly

UE is the machine refusing to spin because the weight is bunched to one side. A single bedsheet, a heavy towel, or a load of mixed light and heavy items will do it. Open the door, shake the laundry out, redistribute it and restart the spin.

If UE keeps appearing on normal loads, check the machine is level. All four feet need to be firm on the floor with no rock. On an uneven Kolkata floor a few turns of the adjustable feet usually fixes it. Persistent UE on a level machine with a balanced load can point at worn suspension or a tired drum bearing.

LE: the motor cannot turn

LE means the drum is being told to rotate and is not moving. Switch off, open the door, and check nothing is physically jamming the drum. An overloaded machine is the harmless version of this.

If the drum turns freely by hand and LE still comes up, it is the motor, the hall sensor that tracks its position, or a seized bearing. That is a technician job, and it is worth attending to promptly, because forcing a machine with a stiff bearing puts load on parts that cost more than the bearing does.

CL is not a fault

Worth knowing: CL is child lock, not an error. The machine is working perfectly and is simply ignoring the buttons. Hold the two buttons marked with the child lock symbol, usually for three seconds, and it clears. We have been called out for this more than once, so it is worth ruling out before booking anyone.

When to stop using the machine

Switch it off at the socket and call someone if you see any of these.

AE, the leak code. The machine has detected water inside the cabinet. Water and a live appliance are a bad combination. Turn it off, close the tap, leave it.

Any burning or hot plastic smell, with or without a code showing.

The machine trips your MCB or RCCB when you switch it on. That is an electrical fault, not a cycle fault.

LE or CE that returns straight after a reset. Running a machine with a struggling motor can take the drive board with it.

A general rule: do not keep resetting a machine that shows the same code every time. The code is doing its job. Clearing it over and over only hides the warning, and now and then it turns one failed part into two.

Why these codes come up more often in Kolkata

After twelve years on machines across North and Central Kolkata, some patterns are hard to miss.

Water pressure drives a good share of IE calls, particularly on upper floors of older buildings and in flats fed by a shared pump. The machine is fine. It simply cannot fill quickly enough at peak hours.

Sediment clogs inlet filters here far faster than the manuals assume. Cleaning that screen once or twice a year prevents a service call.

Voltage swings are hard on drive boards. A machine throwing CE or odd intermittent codes in the evening, when the load on the line is heaviest, is worth plugging into a stabiliser before anything else.

Monsoon damp works on door seals. A gasket that seats perfectly in February can start producing dE codes in August as the rubber swells and stiffens.

Questions people ask us

How do I reset an LG washing machine error code?

Switch the machine off at the socket, wait a minute, switch it back on and run a short cycle. That clears the code from the display. It does not fix whatever caused it. If the code returns immediately, the underlying problem is still there and resetting again will not help.

Does an error code mean I need a new PCB?

Very rarely. Most LG codes point at water supply, drainage, the door or the load, and plenty need no parts at all. A real board fault looks different: a dead panel, frozen buttons, or a code that makes no sense against what the machine is actually doing. Even then a board can often be repaired at component level rather than replaced outright, which costs considerably less.

What does it cost to fix an LG washing machine error?

The doorstep visit and full diagnosis is a flat ₹299, and that amount is set against your final bill if you go ahead with the repair. Beyond that it varies a great deal: a clogged filter or a misrouted hose may need nothing more than the visit, an inlet valve or door lock is a modest part replacement, and motor or board work sits higher. What a repair costs depends on the fault, the parts used, the brand and the condition of the machine, so we quote only after the technician has seen it, and nothing proceeds without your approval.

Important: we are an independent repair service

Roy Home Appliances Service Care is an independent, third party home appliance repair service provider. We are not an authorised service centre for LG, and we are not associated with, affiliated to, endorsed by or part of the authorised service network of LG or any other brand or manufacturer.

We are a multi brand repair service. We repair home appliances from all major brands, and we have no commercial tie up with any single one of them. Brand names, model names and product names mentioned on this page are the property of their respective owners and are used here only to identify the appliances we service and to help readers understand their own machine.

If your appliance is still inside the manufacturer's warranty period, we would suggest you contact the brand's own authorised service centre first, since a repair by an independent service provider may affect that warranty. Error codes also vary between models and production years, so treat this guide as a starting point rather than a replacement for your own machine's manual.
